Although Kerry grew up in Cape Town and Neil in Johannesburg, fate still found a way to make them meet! The couple met at a signing session Kerry had to do in Johannesburg in August 2001. “I had worked with his sister and that is how we were introduced. It wasn't an immediate moment of chemistry, as both of us were in a serious relationship at the time.”
A couple of months later, Kerry was back in Johannesburg for the launch of the magazine she had done the signing for previously … and again Neil was there! “I remember thinking, how did I not notice how hot this man was?” At that point both of them were (luckily) single … the day turned into a great party that ended close to 08:00 the next morning, filled with plenty of chemistry and dancing. “I'll never forget that night for as long as I live!”
The big proposal came when Kerry and Neil decided to go skiing in Austria with a few friends in March 2007. “To be honest, I knew that marriage was on the cards (we'd been together just over five years) but it never prepares you for the moment the question is asked! It still takes you completely by surprise.”
It was day two at the slopes and in hindsight there were a couple of things Neil did that was a little strange to Kerry: “Waking me up at 04:00 in the morning to chat when anyone who knows him, knows he sleeps for death!”
All of them went out skiing for the day, just like all the previous days – so everything seemed normal again. But on their last ski lift going up for their last run, before they were going to retire to the Apres ski bar to meet some of their friends, Neil put his arm around Kerry and asked! “Of course I cried and forgot to answer him and after about ten seconds of much anticipation he said ‘Babe, you haven't said yes!!’ Through tears I replied with ‘yes, yes, yes obviously!".
They finished their short ride up the mountain and when they reached the top, Neil took his right ski off and got down on his knee to make it official. “Yes, my husband is a legend!” One of their friends, who was four or five chairs behind them saw Kerry crying and thought Neil had another knee injury as he has had a few knee injuries before, and came screaming over. He quickly realized that was not the case and let them have a little time before coming over to congratulate them. They then met the rest of their friends at the bar and spent the rest of the week celebrating.
Kerry and Neil’s ceremony and reception was held on 23 September 2007, at Webersburg Wine Estate, just outside of Stellenbosch. The weather played along very well, and the ceremony took place on the lawns next to the dam, creating a breathtaking 360 view of the Stellenbosch Winelands. One of Kerry and Neil’s best moments was their “first kiss” after the minister pronounced them husband and wife. And for Kerry it was also when Neil started his speech with "on behalf of my wife and I”!
Pre-dinner drinks were held on the terrace where guests were treated to sparkling wine with a fresh seasonal berry, Springbok Carpaccio on spoons with rocket and pecorino cheese, crisp asparagus rolls with Gruyere Cheese sauce just to name a few.
The reception took place in the main hall....rectangular tables, covered with charcoal grey cloths, seated eight to ten guest on beautiful mahogany chairs. The table decor was kept elegantly simple with use of only a selection of candles, contained in an array of glass votives as centerpieces. Each place setting had a napkin folded into a pouch, filled with a fragrant posy of herbs and soft flowers. As a finishing touch each napkin pouch had an individualised menu card tied onto it. These posies were collected from the tables and later, wrapped in metallic shades of tissue paper, handed back to guests as a small 'thank you'.
Traditional floral centre-pieces were deliberately left of the dining tables as to allow sufficient space for the lavish menu of platters and trays. Larger floral installations consisting out of a menagerie of glass vases and theme coloured flowers (white and shades of green) were positioned throughout the room as to create interest in unobtrusive divides.
After a night full of festivities, Mr and Mrs McKenzie retired to their honeymoon suite at Webersburg. A honeymoon to Pezula awaited them the next morning, but not for too long, as cricket season was to start again soon! But a second honeymoon is apparently in the pipeline …
“There are very few words that can describe how you feel throughout your wedding day! The day before I was so anxious! I had a great big lunch with my girlfriends while the boys played golf. We met them at the golf club afterwards to say hi for a while... and then I said goodbye to my boyfriend to join my family for a "farewell celebration" from McGregor to McKenzie... I was quiet and very wrapped up in my own thoughts and increasingly beating heart! I woke up the next day - calm! It was unreal. This was going to be one of the best days of my life! Of course, I was marrying the man of my dreams ... this is easy! The day flew by so quickly, I must have blinked twice and the day was coming to an end! It is all the clichés and more to describe the day. All of our family and friends in one room celebrating with us was a very special feeling!
Let me tell you that having a wedding coordinator is by far one of the best investments you'll ever make! From our engagement until the big day, Neil and I were traveling overseas for work quite substantially and attempting this by myself would have ended in a disaster of huge proportions! So, I decided that was the way to go. We met Aleit, Yolanda and the team sometime in April. My immediate impression was professional, stylish and classy. The moment I walked in I thought 'yes', this is them. What's very special about the way they handle everything is the personal relationship that's built from the first consultation. They get to know you as a couple and want the day to represent you. Their attention to detail was fantastic and they always leave something as a surprise for the day. On the day you don't have to blink an eyelid. Everything is so under control and so discreet that even if a fire broke out in the kitchen I don't think we would have known about it. They allow you the freedom and relaxation (and that of your family), so you can focus on what the day is really about.”
Advice to future Brides and Groom:
- Trust your coordinators - they have done this a million times! Initially, I wanted to know everything - how, when and what what what! I can be too organized and want to be doing things and making sure everything is as I want it by repeating myself constantly to make sure it was understood. What was I thinking? That is their job, let them do it. You will love the result because at the end of the day you're there to marry the love of your life, they're there to make sure you enjoy every second of it!
- One thing I was told by Aleit to do is to take a step back and just watch for a minute. Trying to take it all in, an almost near impossible task let me tell you! What I will say is - Listen really hard to your speeches, remember what you say to each other during your first dance and take five minutes, just the two of you somewhere quiet to just … be!

Mistaken identities of Jonathan and his twin brother, lead in 2001 to a blissful marriage on 28 July 2007. “We immediately hit it off and we soon became inseparable, we knew we were meant to be together forever!”
Three years passed until Jonathan popped the question during a romantic dinner at La Maseria in Durbanville.
Allegra Lague and Jonathan Visser ceremony took place in the lovely Stone Chapel in Tokai. A classical trio added a beautiful touch to the atmosphere, especially when they started playing “Pachelbel’s Canon in D” as Allegra walked down the isle. The couple’s favourite moment came when they were pronounced husband and wife … “everything else came a close second, as it was all a perfect fairytale culmination of the year of hard work and planning that went into it.”
After the ceremony, the guests received a bottle of still mineral water as well as an Asian umbrella in case of rain, while the newlyweds were taken to a nearby beach to have their photographs taken. (Yes, there was a period with no rain!)
The reception was held at Welgemeend, in the city centre with a wonderful view of Table Mountain. Guests were welcomed by saxophone and guitar to set the mood under a Bedouin tent on the terrace in front of the Welgemeend House. Sparkling wine and white and red grape juices with delicious canapés like crisp wonton triangles topped with rich salmon confit and 5-spiced duck spring rolls served with a sweet soy dipping sauce were enjoyed
As guests were taken to their seats, Michael Buble’s “A Crazy Little Thing Called Love” announced the arrival of Mr and Mrs Visser. The cutting of the cake immediately followed to kick off the festivities for the evening.
After the entrée, which consisted of light and crispy prawn tempura with a honey mirin dipping sauce, served with a little bowl of cellophane noodle and julienne vegetable caperinha salad, Moet Champagne was presented to all for the toasting of the speeches.
The speeches were then followed by a served dinner: Beef fillet medallions served with a classic potato galette, minted chargrilled asparagus and courgettes and quenelles of sweet potato and pumpkin puree with a rich red wine jus.
The opening of the dance floor took place after dinner and Allegra and Jonathan took to the floor to the tunes of “Endless Love” by Mariah Carey & Luther Vandross.
“Everything was a true fairytale on our wedding day, just one highlight after another, from having my mother fly down from London (with my “princess” Gina shoes…) to be with me, to seeing my husband-to-be (looking seriously handsome) waiting for me at the alter.”
The newlyweds left the next morning for a luxurious pampering week in Knysna, filled with spa treatments and indulgence, followed later by a week of shopping, sightseeing and visiting Allegra’s family in London.
“Thank you to Aleit, Simoné and the rest of the team … you kept me sane! Your attention to detail, inspirational ideas and exceptional 24/7 hard work and dedication far exceeded my expectations, and ensured that I had the fabulous wedding I had always dreamed of!”
Advice to future Brides and Grooms:
- Take time to breathe it all in and enjoy every moment, the time truly flies by before you know it.
- Don’t worry about the weather … I’ve learnt there is not much one can do to change it!
- Pay attention to the small details, and personalize things where possible, your guests will really appreciate and remember that.
- Enlist the help of a wedding coordinator, such as The Aleit Group, they will without a doubt make your wedding stress free and spectacular!

Aileen Long and Japie Sauerman spotted each other for the first time at a friend’s house. Both of them were working as expats in Dar Es Salaam at the time ... “That first face to face meeting was amazing. We have been together ever since!”
On 27 October 2006, Japie took Aileen away on a surprise weekend to Makalali Private Game Reserve in Limpopo, as he knew how much she adored the bushveld … a year to the day before their wedding was to take place. They went on an evening game drive excursion and enjoyed the sunset with a bottle of champagne for company. Arriving back at the lodge, they were told that the bath in their room was leaking and the staff was seeing to the problem. (“Strange, I thought at the time, seeing as we hadn't even used the bath yet!”). After some wine in the tree house bar, Japie lead Aileen back to their room and quickly ushered her inside to get ready for dinner. A noise outside their room triggered Aileen’s curiosity, but Japie stopped her and said: “Maybe it is animals or something?!”
After a while, there was a knock on the door from their hostess. They walked outside onto their “stoep” and there was a trail of atmospheric candles and rustic lanterns leading to a private game viewing deck which was covered in candlelight, roses and an intimate dinner table that was beautifully decorated. They were served a delectable meal and the waiting staff disappeared after dessert. Believe it or not, the lions started roaring in the distance, and that was when Japie got down on one knee and asked Aileen to marry him … “It was beautiful and we both cried and cried!”
The wedding was a reflection of both their cultures … Afrikaans and Irish. Plenty of food, drink, music and fun! Aileen and Japie had a traditional Irish harpist to play during the ceremony to reflect Aileen’s passion for her Irish heritage.
A gazebo overlooking the Helshoogte Mountains was the ideal setting at Clouds Estate for their ceremony. Walking down the isle to Aileen’s favourite piece of music, “Pachelbel’s Canon in D”, arm-in-arm with her dad, was Aileen’s favourite moment. Aileen and Japie both agreed that another highlight was saying their vows to each other, “Saying our vows was amazing, the whole world seemed to disappear and it was just the two of us!” During their union, they incorporated a special tribute to their mothers, where they joined the couple at the gazebo and each lit a candle to represent Japie and Aileen as individuals. The couple then took the two individual candles, lit by the Mums, and lit a single candle together to represent their marriage and unity. (This is an Irish Catholic wedding tradition)
Once Aileen and Japie were declared husband and wife, they walked down the aisle where they were joined by a jazz duo who lead them through the vineyards to the piazza where a drinks reception awaited them all. The vineyard’s lines were used to attach random photographs of the couple, their family and friends, en route to the piazza. After mingling with the guests and sipping some champagne, they were whisked away to take their photographs.
The guests were then ushered downstairs to the reception area under the piazza. The tables were elegantly set with white linen, and complimented by long vases filled with St. Joseph’s Lilies. The green of the flowers was picked up by the green wine glasses on the table. As Aileen and Japie entered the reception to the old classic "Love is in the Air", all their friends and family were on their feet, clapping and cheering! “It was definitely the best gooseflesh moment of the evening!”
After dinner was served, the speeches began, which was another fun event for the couple. All the guests were then ushered upstairs to the living room of the main house to share in the couple cutting the cake and to indulge in the beautiful dessert platters and mini Irish coffees. Then it was back onto the roof of the piazza for the fire dancer display which went down very well with all present - unique entertainment!
During this time, Aleit and his team created a fantastic look change: a black and white checkerboard dance floor was put down, and the white linen was changed to burgundy, transforming the reception area completely! Aileen and Japie opened the dance floor to their favourite song, "I'll Be" by Edwin McCain, and so the party lasted until the early hours of the morning. “We had the most wow day of our lives! It was truly incredible!”
“From the very beginning, Aleit and his team treated Japie and I like a prince and princess. It almost felt like ours was the only wedding they were organizing! We felt so important! The team is a great bunch of people … very professional and bubbly. Aleit and the team immediately made us feel like everything was under control, down to the finest detail. And their taste was impeccable.
Our wedding day, on 27 October 2007, was just perfect from start to finish … all of our dreams came true! The day ran like clockwork, the décor and special requests were perfectly executed. All our guests commented on how well the day flowed and how beautiful everything was. The coordinator created such a beautiful atmosphere and was a wonderful friend to us during the process. It was truly the best day of our lives, thanks to this competent and dynamic team of people.”
Advice to future Brides and Grooms:
- Every married couple gives this advice and you can't imagine what they are talking about until your wedding day comes around … it FLIES by like a hazy dream. Do make a conscious decision to try and take in as much of the day as possible. Try and remember that beautiful moment when you walk down the aisle, the moment when you first kiss as husband and wife, your first dance … these are memories which you will cherish forever!
- Don't forget to spend time with each other during the evening! Remember that everyone is there to see the two of you, and they will want to chat and catch up with you as much as possible. It is easy to get separated for long periods of time without even realising that it's been an hour or two! Japie and I spent lots of time with our family and friends, but we also took each other aside every now and again to take in a few minutes on our own and reflect on our gorgeous and special day!
- Enjoy it! Many bridal couples get caught up in the hype of the day and tend to forget that it is in fact a celebration of your love for each other! Just relax, get completely caught up in all the beautiful moments of the day and smile through it all!
- Relax the day before your wedding, and spend some quality time with your family. It is time to wind down at that stage … all the hard work should already be done. (Well, with Aleit and his amazing team on board, you will have nothing to do but chill!). Spoil yourself with a massage, laugh a lot with your family and friends and start enjoying the whole experience the day before!
- Ask Aleit and his team to create your perfect day!! These people are so talented and experienced … whatever your heart desires, they WILL create it for you, beautifully!
