8 March 2008

Jackie and Rob met in London, while both of them were trainee solicitors at the same law firm in London, UK.  Rob was busy with his second year, while Jackie was only starting her first year. They soon became friends and did the “flirting-thing” for about a year before the romance kicked in.

Time flew by and Jackie and Rob returned to South Africa.  Rob ensured that his proposal to Jackie was a complete surprise.  It was Valentine’s Day, and he took her to Franschhoek where he spoilt her with a soothing massage at the local spa and they spent a tranquil day together.  That evening, after a delicious six-course dinner at Le Quartier Français, Rob got down on one knee and proposed. Jackie remembered: “I was speechless, which is an incredibly rare occurrence!”

18 October 2007 announced the big day for the Sheldons … “Our wedding day was the most amazing day. We were both blown away by how much fun we had and how fabulous it was. The whole day, from start to finish, was absolutely gorgeous and full of joy.”

The ceremony and reception took place at Le Franschhoek Hotel and Spa and while the guests arrived, the a cappella group (Aleit Music and Entertainment Vocal Ensemble) were humming and singing in a perfect soft whisper to break the silence. Jackie arrived on the arm of her brother to the famous Beatle song, “All you need is love”, performed by the a cappella Group.

Guests were then lead by a sax and a guitar duo to the lawns near the reception area for pre-dinner drinks and canapés like Rare Roast Beef with Wild Mustard, Calamari with Sweet Peppers and Pesto, Prawn Skewers with Thai Chilli Jam and other tasty bites were on the menu. This was complemented by Graham Beck Brut Sparkling wine and Red and White Sparkling Grape juice.

A funky jazz quartet kicked off the reception at Le Franschhoek, followed by the entrance of the newlyweds and the cutting of the cake.  Starters included Salad Caprice - Mozzarella, plum tomatoes, reduced balsamic dressing & basil pesto. After the speeches, main course followed which was a scrumptious Roasted Lamb Rump - Spanish Vegetables, Potatoes & Natural Jus.

After dessert were served the real party kicked off with a full seven piece jazz band that made every guest’s foot tap to the upbeat tunes.

Soon the opening dance took place and Jackie and Rob strutted their stuff to the sound of Finlaye Quaye’s “It’s great when we are together”.

Jackie and Rob’s best moment of the day was difficult to pin point, as they had so many to choose from … “I don’t think I can choose. I loved it when we said our vows, walking back down the aisle with Rob after we got married, our quiet moments having a chat and a bit of a giggle when we had our photos taken, walking in to a funky song that made us laugh and seeing all our friends and family clapping and smiling and sharing in our big day!

“Having Yolanda and her team at the wedding meant we didn’t have a single thing to worry about and that everything down to the tiniest detail was taken care of.  It meant that our wedding was the most magical day to remember and that we could enjoy ourselves properly with our guests, safe in the knowledge that we were being well looked after! Our guests were blown away by the attention to detail at every single step of the way, from the fact that our wedding table looked completely incredible right down to the matching stunning rose petal confetti in giant glass bowls after the ceremony and fantastic menus on the tables.“

Advice to future Brides and Grooms:

  • Have a little notebook that lists all of the things you need to do, then you can gradually cross things off and you don’t need to worry about them!
  • Definitely use a wedding planner from The Aleit Group - it takes all of the stress and concerns about the organisation of the day away and leaves you free to enjoy yourself with your new husband/wife, family and friends.
  • I was told by my coordinator to get my hair and make up done by someone else (rather than doing it myself). I wasn’t sure but I went with her advice… and she was right. It means you have an hour of sitting down and being pampered and are just relaxing right up to your wedding.
  • Remember to take some time out to spend with your partner (even if it is just sipping a glass of champagne together) - we had a small wedding so were lucky that we got to spend time with everyone and some time to ourselves and it was blissful.

A top night club in Hong Kong was where it all started for Bev and Mal. Mal had just finished organising a professional international snooker event and was at the official post event function. Bev was there with friends for a normal girlie night out.  Mal remembers: “She looked very hot!”

Mal (handsomely dressed in a tux!) decided he just had to go and speak to her, and after many years, as they say, “is history!”.

The proposal took place one evening during their New Year’s Eve celebrations, Mal scored extra points for doing this in an extra romantic way! (“Too many years ago but well worth it!” was Bev’s response!)

Bev and Mal’s experience of the big day was far better than they could have ever dreamed of. “The venue at Grande Provence Estate looked magnificent, the scenery and the Franschhoek Mountains created a tremendous backdrop, and even the weather gods were kind to us, briefly threatening before passing us by. We had so much fun, as did our guests who flew in from all over the world. It consisted of so many elements: theatre, music, tears, laughter, spontaneity and the greatest setting.”

The ceremony, as well as reception, was held at Grande Provence on Sunday, 11 November 2007.  Whilst guests enjoyed small bottles of Appletizer and jugs of water with fresh mint and lime, they were entertained by a solo guitarist providing background music.  Guests were taken by surprise when an African Choir (The Red Dazzlers) appeared and lead them to the Ceremony area.

Bev “made her entrance” with the song ‘All you need is love’, sung by the African Choir.  The ceremony ran smoothly and some of Bev and Mal’s family and friends had the honour to do a few poems and love readings.

After the ceremony, the jazz duo set the mood while the guests enjoyed a variety of drinks and canapés like Mexican Salsa and Guacamole Cups, Salmon Tartare in Cucumber Cups and Chicken Liver and Foie Gras Mousse with Balsamic Raisins.

As the guests were seated at the reception area, Mr and Mrs Thompson made their entrance to Frank Sinatra and Louis Miguel’s version of “Come fly with me”.  This was followed by a choice of Tian of Prawn and Avocado with Tomato Viérge and House Caviar served with a Herb Salad or Salad of Rocket, Blue Cheese and Walnuts garnished with Pears and Beetroot for entrée.

Speeches were then followed by the main course which was a selection of either Herb Crusted Karoo Lamb with Soft Polenta and Courgette Vinaigrette or Roasted Fillet of Norwegian Salmon with Saffron Risotto and Asparagus served with a Chive Buerre Blanc.

In the meantime an after party area was being prepared for all the guests by the Aleit Team.  So after the cutting of the cake, the guests were taken there and watched as the Bride and Groom opened the dance floor to the sound of Simply Red’s “Perfect Love”.

Something special at the end of the evening was the “Diary Room”, located next to the outside fireplace, where guests were asked to leave messages for Bev and Mal - something special for them to keep forever!

This memorable evening was ended by the throwing of the bouquet and garter and guests were treated to a midnight snack of cooked ham that was carved and served with French bread and a variety of mustards, before being transported by shuttles to their rooms.

For the newlyweds the entire day had many great and special moments. “From the ceremony elements to the great party we all had, dancing the night away. But one moment sticks out in my mind:  On closing the balcony doors to the honeymoon suite, when we were about to go to bed around 03:00, there was the most amazing sky I have ever seen!  Stunning, clear and full of stars… a sky created by the weather elements that threatened us earlier in the day!  That is something I will definitely remember and a perfect end to a fantastic day!”

“Aleit and his team were so professional, organised, detailed and most importantly reactive since you need people to take charge when necessary.  They were not afraid to make the 'right' decisions on our behalf.  They truly excel when they are needed most!“

Advice to future Brides and Grooms:

  • Plan well in advance, get a good wedding planner (we recommend one of Aleit's Team Members), who works with you in partnership.
  • Take the opportunity when the wedding is in full flow to step back and look at what is happening and what you and your guests are a part of.
  • Enjoy being "The Event", try to relax and have fun!

While Maria lived in Brighton and Nick in Woodley, Maria’s friend turned out to be the link - and it was bull’s eye!  Maria joined her friend one evening to play darts for a pub in Woodley, The Woodley Yeoman, and joined their team as they needed more players. The pub was Nick’s local and he was a regular there with the rest of his football team mates.

After many weeks of all their friends trying to get them together, Maria was the one who made the first move: “We were both guests at my friends wedding and I plucked up the courage to ask Nick to dance. He said yes so we started dancing. We danced to about two lines of the song when Nick’s friend tapped him on the shoulder and told him it was his turn to buy the drinks! Nick said sorry and proceeded to leave me on the dance floor! At this point I really never thought we would end up getting married. But Nick redeemed himself, apologised and we danced together for the rest of the evening. That was the beginning of our eight year courtship!”

So when did Nick pop the big question? Nick surprised Maria with a trip to Barcelona for her birthday. “I had no idea he was going to propose. Nick had booked a table at a beautiful Spanish Seafood Restaurant for dinner. During dinner he pulled out a ring and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes, but I was in total shock (thought I had food poisoning for about a week as I felt sick) so even after eight years, these things still can come as a fantastic surprise.”

Maria and Nick thought their big day (which took place on 13 November 2007) was fantastic, Maria says: “Everything we ever dreamt of, or could have ever imagined. The day went by so quickly, we tried to follow our coordinator’s advice and take time to look around and soak up the day but there were so many amazing things happening that we felt we could have carried on for another few days! It was like a total fairytale.”  While Nick experienced it as quite an emotional affair… “The moment I saw my soon-to-be wife appear I could not hold back the tears. She was such a vision of beauty and coupled with the stunning location it made me realise that we had done the right thing in getting married in South Africa.”

Guests enjoyed light pre-ceremony drinks on a deck overlooking the dam at Le Jardin. From there they moved to the Ceremony which was the grass area at the dam. The service was followed by pre-dinner drinks on the porch and surrounding grass areas by the main house.  Here everyone enjoyed Bobotie Spring Rolls with a Date and Fig Dipping Sauce, seared Fillet rolled around Chilli Harissa Goat’s Cheese and Rocket, served on forks, Cajun Prawn Skewers in a sweet Chilli Vodka Shot accompanied by Kir Royales.

The reception was held on the lawns in front of the Manor House in a chic Bedouin tent.  After all the speeches, starters and mains were taken care of – guests were invited to view a breathtaking display by fire spinners – definitely one of the highlights of the evening. Then back into the tent for the couple to cut the cake and to open the dance floor to Aerosmith’s “Don’t want to miss a thing”.

Looking back, Maria and Nick had so many “best moments” that not one can be pinpointed, but if pushed, it was when they just signed the wedding certificate … “Aleit brought us both a glass of champagne and we walked out on to the terrace to greet our guests. It was the best moment for me as I thought - ‘I am finally Mrs Romero!’ All our friends and family were waiting to greet us (with huge smiles across their faces) and it was time to relax and just have some fun.”

One of Nick’s favourite moments was during dinner: “The way Maria and I changed tables after every course, enabling us to spend quality time with all of our guests was one of my fondest memories.  I truly believe all our guests enjoyed it as well.  With the smaller wedding party it worked perfectly.”

“Aleit and his team are sheer professionalism, every small detail was attended to without making us aware of any problems, to us the wedding was seamless. The coordinator that Aleit matched us with was amazing. We really felt like we connected with her, she took all our dreams for our wedding and turned them into reality, which is something that we could have never achieved on our own.”
