As owners of one of South Africa’s top restaurants, it’s not surprising that Maryke and Reuben met each other through their love for cooking! The couple became acquainted with each other when Maryke was studying at the ICA in the Stellenbosch winelands. As Maryke recalls, “my first practical placement was at Monneaux restaurant in Franschhoek, where I met Reuben in the kitchen.”
The proposal took place in style at the Mount Nelson in Cape Town. “We had massages in our room, followed by dinner. Finally I was asked in a very casual way in the moonlight by a bay window and Table Mountain in the background!”
With the village of Riebeek Kasteel as a delightful setting, the wedding was a proper country celebration. A transparent tent provided a gorgeous setting for the reception, with vintage inspired décor setting the look. Crisp white tablecloths contrasted with vibrant flower arrangements of pink and yellow, while the lighting could not have been more appropriate with crystal chandeliers and pretty lampshades. Maryke counts meeting Reuben in the church as her favourite moment, and describes the day itself as simply “warm and soulful!”
Always committed to their culinary flair, the couple enjoyed one night in the Twelve Apostles Hotel before returning to Franschhoek to run their restaurant. Today they cherish the memories of their special day, calling it “the best experience ever; we would not have done it any other way.”
